Brief History
The Ukrainian Community School is a not-for-profit organization catering for students from Pre-school to year 10 and is open to all children and youth. It is accredited by the Department of Education and Training.
The school was established in 1954 by post-World War II Ukrainian migrants with the purpose to teach children the language and heritage of their parents and give them the gift of bilingualism. Classes were initially held in a private dwelling, later at St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Noble Park and in 1968 the school moved to its own classrooms within the Ukrainian Community Centre which was built thanks to the mammoth voluntary fundraising and building efforts of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria, South-Eastern (Noble Park) Branch (AUV SE) in conjunction with the School Parents’ Committee. There is a close working relationship between the school and the AUV SE and the School Principal is a permanent Board member. Apart from the classrooms, the school has the use of other Community Centre facilities such as the hall and club room, audio-visual equipment, computers and the internet.
The school is a member of the Ukrainian School Council of Victoria (Inc 25/09/1997) which is, in turn, a member of the Community Languages Victoria and the Ukrainian Education Council of Australia (UECA). Teachers from the school have been elected to serve on the Executive of the UECA. These bodies are responsible for the coordination of Ukrainian schools, Professional Development, Teacher Conferences and curriculum materials development. They liase with mainstream bodies and other Ukrainian community organisations.
Staff have regular meetings and briefings. They attend Professional learning sessions, the Community Languages Conference and the National Ukrainian Teachers’ Conference as well as participate in international Ukrainian language teachers’ forums, conferences and webinars.
The school communicates with parents through notices, newsletters and Google Classroom.
The School Committee is responsible for the viability of the school. Annual General Meetings are held with election of office bearers.
